The Surgical Care Group at Catholic Medical Center and the Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center (BASC) bring you the NH Hernia Center, a dedicated group of surgeons and specialty care providers focused on the treatment and repairs of hernias.
Hernia Care
A hernia occurs when an organ pushes through an opening in the muscle or tissue that holds it in place. For example, the intestines may break through a weakened area in the abdominal wall. Many hernias occur in the abdomen between your chest and hips, but they can also appear in the groin area.
Common symptoms
■ Pressure when bending, lifting or coughing
■ Small, tender bulge anywhere in the abdomen, groin and/or belly-button area
■ Burning, aching sensation around the bulging area
Most hernias aren’t immediately life-threatening, but they don’t go away on their own. Hernias will likely require treatment to prevent potentially serious complications. Many hernias get larger over time. While a hernia may not be causing trouble now, it might lead to more serious complications if it is not repaired. Because of those potentially serious complications, it’s generally recommended that those with a hernia undergo a procedure to repair it before it grows worse.
Some types of hernias can be repaired on an outpatient basis, without hospitalization required and with minimal downtime. Your care team will discuss surgical options with you and make a recommendation based on your history, condition, and needs.
If your surgery does not require a hospital stay, Bedford Ambulatory Surgical Center (BASC) provides safe, high-quality hernia surgery in a convenient outpatient setting. The expert surgeons of The Surgical Care Group perform various types of hernia repairs at the BASC, with a seamless transition to inpatient care if clinically appropriate. Having your hernia surgery at the BASC may cost less than a hospital-based repair.
We will work with you to provide a treatment plan that best suits your needs for your overall health and timely recovery.
